Pedro Arrupe SJ (1907–1991), often called the 'second founder' of the Society of Jesus, was living in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb fell in 1945. A trained medical student before joining the order, he transformed the Jesuit novitiate into a makeshift hospital, caring for the wounded with his own hands.
This profound experience of suffering and service shaped his vision of a faith that does justice. As Superior General, he coined the phrase 'Men and Women for Others', challenging us to live not for ourselves, but for the world's most vulnerable.
